Mouton Rothschild 1998 trades at record levels again

In October, we noted that a number of 1998 vintage First Growths had reached all-time highs. Now, Mouton Rothschild 1998 has traded again at a record level (£4,750), setting a new high for the second time in four months. As Liv-ex notes, the market journey of the 92-point scoring wine (Neal Martin) is able to tell us a few things about other First Growth favourites, particularly Haut Brion 1998.

The Haut Brion 1998 was awarded 98 points, also by Neal Martin, in 2008. Its price then tracked that of the 1998 Mouton until early 2016, when it fell behind. In the past year, it’s outperformed Mouton but is still available at a 10% reduction. As Liv-ex speculates: “Haut Brion 1998 is a far better wine in the opinion of many critics, and one that has historically mirrored Mouton’s progress. Is Mouton’s progress a guide to Haut Brion’s future performance?”
