Cult Wines Tasting With Almaviva

Cult Wines Managing Director Tom Gearing with Almaviva’s Head Winemaker Michel Friou and Export Manager Matias Kupfer

It was a pleasure to meet Michel Friou, Almaviva’s Head Winemaker, and the estate's Export Manager Matias Kupfer at our London office who brought some amazingly great Chilean wines with a Bordeaux story behind.

As probably the most renowned Franco-Chilean wine, Almaviva was born in 1997 as a joint effort between Mouton Rothschild and Viña Concha y Toro. The 60-hectear vineyard stretches on the rocky alluvial slopes of sunny Puente Alto, and has been considered as the best terroir to grow Cabernet Sauvignon. The traditional Bordeaux winemaking techniques at the same time, earned the winery a reputation of 'Chile's First Growth'.

For 20 years, Almaviva has been committed to combining French viticulture with Chilean varieties with an increasing share of the global market. The most recent success was the 100pts Almaviva 2015, which Suckling described as a neoclassic vintage with energy and finesse.

2001 Almaviva, Puente Alto, Chile

Ripe wild strawberries topped with melted mint chocolate. Layered coffee and leather notes to follow the rich mineral nose. Full bodied massive structure pushing plumy persistency through to the long-lasting finish. Top Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) from sunny Puente Alto aged for 17 months in new French oak barrel. Superb mouthfeel and considerable aging potential.

2007 Almaviva, Puente Alto, Chile

A generous nose of ripe cassis with creamy notes of coffee and dark chocolate. The wine comes in a voluptuous texture merging impeccable density and roudness into its perfect balance. Love this deep intense ruby red, definitely one of my favourite Franco-Chilean wines.

2015 Almaviva, Puente Alto, Chile

Perfectly balanced and harmonious with a complexity of stony, floral, black fruits and tobacco notes. The glorious vintage celebrates the estate’s 20th anniversary and has been widely praised byinternational critics. With great intensity and fine grainy tannins, the young 2015 reveals another side of Almaviva full of neoclassic energy and fitness.
