Fine Wine has outperformed almost every other major financial index over the past two decades; providing investors with long-term average returns of c. 12.9% per annum.
Below we have compared the performance of the main fine wine indices against the ASX 200 to provide a comparison as well as context for the performance of the fine wine market against the main Australian equities market.
Liv-ex 100 (AUD) vs. ASX 200 (July 2005 – July 2014)
The Liv-ex Fine Wine 100 Index is the industry leading benchmark. It represents the price movement of 100 of the most sought-after fine wines on the secondary market. The Liv-ex 100 index is based in GBP Sterling, so for the graph below and to represent a direct comparison for Australian investors, the index has been recalculated in Australian $.
Regional Wine Indices (AUD) vs. ASX 200 (July 2005 – July 2014)
The below graph compares in the individual performance of the regional indices that make-up the investment grade market for fine wine. We have include the three largest components Italian, Burgundy and Bordeaux. For comparative analysis, the component indices have been rebased in Australian $.
Wines that make up the component indices
- Bordeaux 500: the ten most recently physical vintages for 50 top Bordeaux chateaux (2001-2010)
- Burgundy 150: the ten most recently physical vintages for 15 white and red Burgundy, including six Domaine Romanée Conti labels
- Italy 100: the ten most recently physical vintages for the five ‘Super Tuscans’ and five other leading Italian producers.
