Although surprisingly approachable, it won’t hit its adolescent stage for 8-10 years, and will last for 25-30 years thereafter. Bravo! It is extraordinary to see what the American proprietor, a banker from Buffalo, NY, Robert Wilmers and Veronique Sanders, the granddaughter of the former proprietor, have accomplished at Haut-Bailly. Together they are pushing this outstanding terroir to first-growth quality levels. It is an amazing success story, and readers looking for a quintessentially elegant Bordeaux need look no further than Haut-Bailly.

  • Tasted at Berry Brother & Rudd’s vertical. The 2006 Haut Bailly seems to be improving in bottle. The freshness and vitality on the nose is instantly captivating with scents of wild brambles, black cherries, dark chocolate and a touch of orange sorbet. It has superb delineation and lift. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. Great focus with superb acidity, lively and vivacious with dried tobacco, thyme and a little rosemary on the focused, poised finish. The oak is very well integrated. Could this might turn out as good as the 2005? Tasted October 2011.
